Tea Tree Essential Oil is derived from the leaves and twigs of Melaleuca alternifolia, a tree native to the northeast coast of New South Wales, Australia. The oil is obtained through steam distillation and is known for its antiseptic and antifungal properties, attributed to compounds called terpenoids. Historically, the tree's leaves were used to make tea, which is how the name "Tea Tree" came about. Tea tree oil has a wide range of uses, including relieving congestion, colds, coughs, and flu symptoms. It is also effective for treating acne, fungal infections, dandruff, vaginal infections, hemorrhoids, athlete's foot, and muscle or joint pain. Adding it to bathwater can help control bacteria. It is important to note that tea tree oil should not be taken internally and should be kept away from children and pets. Pregnant or lactating individuals should avoid its use. The medicinal properties of the tea tree have been rgnized since ancient times in eastern Australia. The Australian aborigines used crushed leaves to treat cuts, burns, sores, and infections. They also inhaled the oil from the leaves to relieve coughs and colds, applied poultices, and infused the leaves to make tea for soothing sore throats. The essential oil became known in Europe for its antimicrobial properties between 1920 and 1930.
